Coalition Releases Legislative Support for Sanctuary Cities Ban

Continues Call for Governor Perry to Act on His Own Emergency Issue

October 12, 2011

JoAnn Fleming

Contact:  JoAnn Fleming, Chair of the Texas Legislature’s TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee and volunteer Executive Director, Grassroots America – We the People

What:  A Thursday, October 13th news conference held as a follow-up to the September 19th news conference where coalition members delivered letters representing thousands of Texans to Governor Perry’s office.  The letters called on the Governor to act in the wake of the legislature’s failure to pass a ban on sanctuary cites in both houses during the 82nd Legislature’s special session.  A ban on sanctuary cities was one of Governor Perry’s own “emergency” legislative items.  [Note: TX House passed the ban on sanctuary cities during the regular session.  The TX Senate passed it during the special session.]

Subject:  Coalition of Texas grassroots leaders will address the “no response” from Governor Perry and will deliver significant legislative support for their efforts to ban sanctuary cities in Texas.  Leaders will renew their call for Governor Perry to act on his unfinished business.

Where:  Texas State Capitol, Speaker’s Press Room

When:  Thursday, October 13th, 11:00 am

Background details:

At the close of the 2011 regular and special legislative sessions, a broad coalition of local grassroots organizations in Texas signed an open letter calling on Governor Rick Perry to address the urgent unfinished business of emergency legislation personally identified by the governor at the beginning of the 82nd legislative session – namely, a ban on “sanctuary city” policies in Texas.  Over 3,000 local activists signed the letter, including representatives of over 100 local tea party, 9-12 and related grassroots groups.  Signatures of representatives of these local groups, in many cases, represent hundreds – even thousands – of local group members.

Roberto Gonzales

One of the leaders scheduled to speak at the news conference:

“As legal immigrants in the late 1960’s, my family and I fled communism.  We came here with the mission to become Americans. We did so to become part of all that makes this country great. Today, we cannot sit by and have our laws ignored by politicians who take an oath to uphold the rule of law and then proceed to choose the laws they want to ignore.  We cannot continue to ignore the security threat of cities in Texas whose leaders insist on providing a safe haven to those who want to remain “under the radar” and use this country without any responsibility whatsoever. Texas elected officials need to do their job and quit playing games with our security and financial future.”   Roberto Gonzalez, Clear Lake TEA Party

URGENT -Call to Action- SPECIAL SESSION CALLED

Date posted: May 31, 2011

Call Governor Perry's Office Today!!

IRCOT ACTION ALERT FOR TUESDAY, MAY 31ST

The 81st Legislature ended with a Democrat filibuster of a key budget bill preventing it’s passage. The Texas Constitution requires the Legislature to pass a budget, and a Special Session has been called by the Governor to start today.

Lt. Gov. Dewhurst already announced that the 2/3 rule will not be in effect.  This would mean that only a simple majority, or 16 votes, would be required to pass a bill in the Senate.  This is the opportunity that we need to pass important immigration related bills.  However, the very latest word is that only 2 bills, SB 1811 and SB 23 have been added to the special session charge!  This is unacceptable in light of the recent killing of a Houston Police Officer by an illegal alien driving drunk.

A request from IRCOT was sent to the Governor asking for the

addition of  3 key immigration bills to the special session charge!

Now, we need your calls and faxes to Gov. Perry!

Ask him to add:

HB 12      Anti-Sanctuary City

HB 1275  E-Verify

HB 608    Cost of benefits to illegal aliens

URGENT – SANCTUARY CITY BILL (HB12) RAISED FROM THE DEAD BUT STILL NEEDS YOUR HELP NOW!!

Date posted: May 20, 2011

Sanctuary Cities Bill Back on Track in Texas Senate

“It would prohibit local governmental entities from adopting policies that prevent local law enforcement from inquiring about immigration status of people lawfully detained or arrested. The issue was designated an emergency item by Gov. Rick Perry and the bill passed the House earlier this month on a party line vote.”- Julian Aguilar

URGENT ACTION NEEDED

LATEST UPDATE!

CALLS NEED TO BE MADE TO GOV., LT. GOV. & ENTIRE SENATE

TO PASS SANCTUARY CITY LEGISLATION!

Sen. Tommy Williams added the sanctuary city provision back to HB 12 and it was then passed out of the committee. It now goes to the Senate where it needs a vote of 21 to be heard on the Senate floor. As you know, in the Senate there are 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats.  WE NEED 2 DEMOCRAT VOTES FOR THE BILL TO BE HEARD ON THE SENATE FLOOR!

BE PREPARED, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HB 12 WAS PASSED OUT OF COMMITTEE ONLY BECAUSE THE COMMITTEE KNEW THAT IT WOULD NEVER MAKE IT TO THE SENATE FLOOR!  WE SHOULD HOLD OUR SENATORS TO ACCOUNT.

YOUR  MESSAGE SHOULD BE:
“Pass HB 12 this session to end the dangerous practice of providing sanctuary to illegal aliens in Texas.  Law enforcement officers, citizens, and other residents (both legal and illegal) have been killed and suffered severe injury because criminal illegal aliens are being allowed to live in our communities without fear.  Violence from drug cartels are threatening our cities through this dangerous policy!  This “magnet” must end this session.”
