GULEN-LED COUP — TURKEY FALLS TO ISLAMISTS

Date posted: March 28, 2013

By Donna Garner and Alice Linahan

Gulen NetworkWhile most of us have been focused on the U. S. debt ceiling and the serious implications for the world’s financial markets, meanwhile another country has just fallen to the Islamists: Turkey.

Turkey has been friendly toward the United States for many years, and one of our largest bases is in Incirlik, Turkey.  This base is essential to our operations in the Middle East.

This last Thursday (7.29.11) Reuters News Service and the British Broadcasting Company broke the news that the Islamic Prime Minister of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, had seized control of the government and the military when Turkey’s top four military commanders (secularists who have stood against Turkey becoming an Islamist state) resigned under pressure.

These four commanders were in charge of the Turkish air, navy, and land forces.  Erdogan’s own choice for commander has now been put in charge of the Turkish military.

DISCREDITING MILITARY COMMANDERS

During the two years leading up to last Thursday, Erdogan and his AKP party have put over 400 people on trial in hearings dominated by Erdogan-appointed judges, including 250 military personnel (almost 10% of their military senior commanders).

More than 58 journalists have been detained without due process for speaking out about the Erdogan government.

On 7.25.11, The Committee to Protect Journalists sent a letter to the Turkish Minister of Justice protesting the detainments. The letter specifically objected to the seizure by the Turkish police of a draft of Ahmet Şık’s unpublished book, The Imam’s Army, that details the influence of Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen on the Turkish state.

Turkish citizens believe the charges are trumped up in order to discredit those who believe in keeping Turkey a secularist (pro-American/pro-Israeli/pro-European) state.

TURKISH PRIME MINISTER ERDOGAN A FOLLOWER OF FETHULLAH GULEN

Erdogan is a follower of Fethullah Gulen.  Since Erdogan took over as Prime Minister in 2002, Gulen/Erdogan/AKP have allegedly orchestrated two trumped up plots called “Ergenekon” and “Sledgehammer.”

FIRST REASON WHY AMERICA SHOULD BE WORRIED

The first reason that we Americans should be concerned about the Islamist coup in Turkey is that Turkey is a member of NATO; and on March 28, 2011, our own President, pro-Muslim Obama, placed our coalition military operations in Libya under NATO control.

This means that our U. S. military personnel fighting under the NATO flag are partially controlled by Turkey which has now turned against America and Israel and is well on its way to becoming an Islamic state.  Turkey has the second-largest army in NATO.

SECOND REASON WHY AMERICA SHOULD BE WORRIED

Our second reason for concern is that Fethullah Gulen lives in Pennsylvania, runs his $25 billion international network from there, and is tied to hundreds of Gulen charter schools right here in the  United States.  (Texas alone has 36 of these Gulen charter schools.)

Gulen plans to take America over in almost exactly the same way that he has taken Turkey over — through the indoctrination of our school children; and ironically, we taxpayers are paying for his Gulen charter schools.

FETHULLAH GULEN BEHIND ENROGAN

Who is behind Turkish Prime Minister Enrogan and the AKP?  Fethullah Gulen is an Islamist imam who is considered by many to be the “most dangerous man in the world.”

As Ahmet Sik, a Turkish journalist now under arrest, was being dragged away to jail by the Turkish security forces, he yelled, “Whoever touches the Gulen movement gets burned!”

GULENIST BELIEFS

Turkey’s ruling party is the AKP led by Prime Minister Erdogan.  He is a Muslim, believes in Sharia law, and is a follower of Fethullah Gulen.

Erdogan was elected in 2003 and was recently re-elected in June 2011 because working in clandestine operations with the Gulenists, he has been able to control and coerce the Turkish masses through fear.

Two of the basic tenets that Fethullah Gulen uses to indoctrinate his followers at an early age are (1) “taquiya” which is an Islam belief that permits them to lie to “infidels” (i.e., anyone who is not a Muslim), and (2) total secrecy — a belief that if a person never shares a secret, then he never has to worry about his secrets becoming known.  In fact, secrecy is an obsession for Gulenists.  In Pearls of Wisdom, Gulen explains, “The secret is your slave but you become its slave if you disclose it.”

Dr. Aland Mizell, a leading Gulenist researcher, stated:

What Gulenists want is total power and one-man rule; they want a status so that none could dare to object to them or to their leader, because they sincerely believe that Allah has chosen them to disseminate their brand of Turkish Islam to the world, and therefore that everything they do is right and without mistakes.

THE GULENIST PLOT TO OVERTHROW TURKEY

Prior to Gulen/AKP/Erdogan, Turkey was pro-America, pro-Israel, and pro-European. Turkey is one of 28 members of NATO but has the second-largest army.

Now Gulen/AKP/Erdogan have formed close alliances with Russia, Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria.

Gulen has set the political agenda in Turkey using his followers in AKP.

Gulen controls a worldwide, $25 billion network of media, financial institutions, associations, and foundations.

Gulen is an Islamist imam who considers himself to be a prophet.

His sermons indicate that he intends for Turkey and the entire world to become Islamist and to follow Sharia law. He wants to establish a caliph and the re-establishment of the Ottoman Empire. Several years ago, Turkish television aired footage of Gulen saying:

You must move in the arteries of the system without anyone noticing your existence until you reach all the power centers…You must wait for the time when you are complete and conditions are ripe, until we can shoulder the entire world and carry it…The philosophy of our service is that  we open a house somewhere and, with the patience of a spider, we lay our web to wait for people to get caught in the web…

In 1971, Gulen was arrested in Turkey for holding secret religious activities in which he ran illegal summer camps to indoctrinate youth.

Gulen has groomed his image to make him look as if he is a “tolerant” Muslim, but he is actually a follower of Sa’id-I Nursi, the founder of the Islamist Nur (light) movement.

Gulen/Nur intend for Islamists to take over the world and establish an Islamic caliphate that follows Sharia law.

In 1998, Gulen escaped to America to avoid being questioned about his involvement to overthrow Turkey’s pro-American/pro-Israel government.

Bill Clinton was President at the time.  Bill and Hillary Clinton and the CIA welcomed Gulen and promoted him as being an outstanding scholar who represented a peaceful, “secular” form of Islam.

When President George W. Bush took office in January 2001 and America experienced the radical Muslim terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Bush administration (along with Karen Hughes who now promotes the Gulen charter schools) evidently wanted to appear to be “politically correct” and, therefore, fell for Gulen’s lies.

Now the United States has a Muslim-friendly President in the White House who has appointed Dalia Mogahed as his Muslim advisor.  Mogahed is a Gulenist.

GULEN’S LIFE IN AMERICA

Gulen lives in eastern Pennsylvania with 100 followers who guard him and tend to his needs.  His male followers try to blend into American society by wearing suits and ties, and they do not marry until age 50.  Their spouses are expected to dress in the Islamic manner as dictated by Gulen.

Gulen runs his international network from Pennsylvania, and he and his next-in-command (Nurettin Veren) say they control 75% of the schools and universities in Turkey plus hundreds of schools in 110 countries worldwide.

Gulenists have targeted children to indoctrinate them to become the ruling class of the Islamist, Turkish state.  Under Erdogan, textbooks have been changed, Islam has been emphasized, and thousands of imams have been placed into positions as teachers and administrators in the schools.

GULENIST-EDUCATED CHILDREN NOW IN HIGH PLACES

In an interview in 2008, Veren said, “Children whom we educated in Turkey are now in the highest positions. There are governors, judges, military officers. There are ministers in the government. They consult Gulen before doing anything.”

Gulenists have also taken over the 200,000 Turkish police force.  Veren said, “There are imam security directors; imams wearing police uniforms. Many police commissioners get their orders from imams.”

Those in the police academies who were not Gulenists were dismissed, and the AKP promotes only those officers who are totally dedicated to Gulen.

In 2008 Endogan ordered the arrests of the people who were speaking out against this Gulen takeover.

Wiretapping by Gulenists has penetrated Turkey to the highest levels, and they have managed to restrist technology so that secretly recorded meetings of those opposed to Gulen/AKP/Erdogan have been made public.

Turkish journalists have also had their wires tapped because the head of the police wiretapping unit is a Gulenist.

Anti-AKP demonstrators have experienced violent police brutality, and private citizens who have spoken out about Erdogan/AKP have been abducted and brutalized.

TURKISH INSTITUTIONS FALL TO GULENISTS

Traditionally, the Turkish military has been the guarantor of the Constitution; but now according to Veren (Gulen’s top man), the Gulenists have entrenched themselves within the military also.  Veren stated:

The Fethullahist military officers were once our students, who we financially supported, educated, and assisted.  When these grateful children graduated and reached influential positions, they put themselves and their positions at the service of Fethullah Gulen…when Gulen students graduate from the police or military academies — as do the new doctors and lawyers — they present their first salaries to Fethullah Gulen as a gesture of their gratitude.

Gulenists have also taken over the Turkish court system because Erdogan replaced thousands of judges and prosecutors with his own AKP/Gulen followers. Anybody applying for judgeships has to pass an AKP review.

In years past, the Turkish media used to be relentless about exposing government corruption; but when Erdogan came to power in his first term, he filed “frivolous” lawsuits against 63 journalists in 16 publications.  This successfully dissuaded journalists’ from ferreting out corruption.

During Erdogan’s ten year rule, his government has seized control of Sabah-ATV, which was Turkey’s second largest media group. Then Erdogan made his son-in-law the CEO of the group.

Now nine of the leading TV, radio stations, and newspapers are all owned by AKP/Gulen.

It is no wonder that Erdogan won re-election in June 2011 since he and the AKP controlled most of the media, the military, the security forces, and the courts.

GULEN — THREAT TO AMERICA

Homeland Security and the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Service tried to deny Gulen permanent residence in the Unites States.  In 2008 Gulen brought a lawsuit against Michael Chertoff of Homeland Security.  The Department contended that Gulen did not meet the definition of a person with “extraordinary ability in the field of education” but that he was actually a “leader of a large and influential religious and political movement with immense commercial holdings.”  The State tried to prove that the acclaim that Gulen touted was actually sponsored or financed by his own movement.

Gulen evidently managed to “pay off” enough institutions and high-profile people to mount pressure to get his status reversed, and the 29 letters of reference that he filed with his motion came from theologians or Turkish political figures closely associated with his Gulenist movement.  The judge ruled in Gulen’s favor, and now he can stay in the United States permanently.

SPREAD OF GULEN SCHOOLS IN TEXAS

One of the most disheartening reports has been the connections of former executive director of the Republican Party and trusted advisor to President George W. Bush, Karen Hughes and her close ties to the Gulen/Cosmos Foundation’s Harmony Schools here in Texas. As you can hear in this video Ms. Hughes is very interested in promoting Harmony Science Charter Schools and accessing Texas  tax dollars to create competition for public schools by funding the Gulen/Harmony charter schools.

In a bold move, the Gulen/Cosmos Foundation/Harmony Charter Schools have now branched out from their usual “math and science” venues into a brand new school to open soon in Austin, Texas.

This new Gulen school will be called the Harmony School of Political Science.  This means that at taxpayers’ expense, Turkish teachers (many of whom are here on H-1 visas and are Muslims) will be teaching our students “American” history.  Can you imagine how these teachers who can hardly speak English and are fresh from Turkey will present such historically significant elements as the Holocaust, the Founding Fathers, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution?

Yes, all teachers in Texas (including those in the Gulen schools) are to follow the state-approved curriculum requirements; but nothing constrains teachers from teaching those requirements with a particular political spin.  Since almost all of the terrorists who have declared jihad against Americans are Muslims, then it should make us very skeptical about having Muslim teachers teach our Texas students to love, respect, and appreciate America.

ACTION STEP

A protest rally will be held on the public sidewalk in front of Harmony School of Political Science – Austin, Texas — on Aug. 30, 2011, from 9:00 to 10:00 A. M.

People in the Austin area should definitely commit to be at the rally since this Harmony School of Political Science is being opened right there in your own city.

Please bring signs (without any wooden or metal stakes), wear T-shirts, display “sandwich-type” posters (affixed to front and back of body), or create other visual displays that are in line with the City of Austin laws (posted at bottom of this e-mail).

Are we Desensitizing our Daughters? More Texas High School Girls wearing Islamic Attire

Date posted: March 26, 2013

While in Washington last week I ask the question…..

With the CSCOPE and Common Core Curriculum are we creating a National Security problem. Please take the time to listen to the answer and listen to Pamela Gellar’s solution.

Hint it is YOU-

Now today we have reports of  Texas Cscope School in Rockwall ISD has students adorn Hijabs in a High School Geography Class. From Ginger Russell More Texas Students in Islam Attire

The students photographed themselves and posted the photos on the popular  social media site, Istagram.

Presently in the Islamic tourist region of the Maldives a young 15 year old girl is sentenced to flogging of a 100 whippings. Her crime was ruled “SEX OUTSIDE OF MARRIAGE” due to the fact that her step dad raped her continually over a period of years and murdered her baby.

Rockwall girl post

Let’s step back and look as what in fact is happening in other parts of the world where in the name of “Political Correctness” have allowed in Islamic Sharia law.

NewMediaJournal-Islamic extremists are stepping up the creation of “no-go” areas in European cities that are off-limits to non-Muslims.

Many of the “no-go” zones function as microstates governed by Islamic Sharia law. Host-country authorities effectively have lost control in these areas and in many instances are unable to provide even basic public aid such as police, fire fighting and ambulance services.

The “no-go” areas are the by-product of decades of multicultural policies that have encouraged Muslim immigrants to create parallel societies and remain segregated rather than become integrated into their European host nations.

Now I ask you again…..Are we desensitizing our Daughters and creating a National Security Threat.

Please keep in mind that because we are taking on the public schools parents are looking for other avenues to educate their children. Many who can’t afford private schools (even though private schools use CommonCore and CSCOPE) run to charter schools. Who by the way target the lower income hispanic and black community.

Just to be clear, I am not against all Charter Schools. Although I firmly believe we must have major safe guards in place to protect our citizens from organizations who seek access to our children to harm our nation. I also believe we should hold elected officials accountable for the legislation they put forward which may pose a National Security threat to our nation.

By promoting Charter School legislation some elected officials see a way to get votes and stay in their positions of power. Which gives them the opportunity to move to higher office. In addition it opens the door to raise huge campaign donations from charter school lobbies.  An example of such groups is the Cosmos Foundation/Harmony/Gulen Science Centers who have given free all expense paid trips to legislators in Texas and across the country and whose consultant was former executive director of the Republican Party and trusted advisor to President George W. Bush, Karen Hughes Hughes.

If you are reading this an asking what are the Harmony Charter Schools? Below is a great video by Frank Gaffney founder of the (Center for Security Policy) as he works within his own community to stop the Gulen movment in Loudoun Virginia. Harmony is the name for the Gulen/Cosmos Foundation schools in Texas. In other states they go by different names. “

List of Gulen Charter Schools in the United States

An example of what results is Texas Senate Bill 2 currently working its way through the Texas Legislature.  Some of the heroes on exposing CSCOPE are now pushing a bill that completely opens the door for the Gulen Charter Schools to come into Texas in mass numbers.

Below is a breakdown of Senate Bill 2.

Senate bill 2 is a comprehensive overhaul of the laws that govern charter schools.  Changes are made on the authorizing, governing, and establishing of charter schools in Texas.

Looking at the bill, there were a lot of areas of concern, given the recent experience on CScope in Texas.

  • The current laws cap the number of charter schools in Texas at 215.  The cap is entirely removed.

  • A new governing board of 7 appointees will be the only oversight of these schools.  The State Board of Education will have no authority to grant or revoke charter school privileges in this state.  This puts us back in the position of non-elected officials in charge of the education.

  • If there are any vacant or underutilized facilities in a school district, the ISD “shall” lease that taxpayer funded facility to any approved charter school that wants it.  Note the word in the bill is shall (a mandate) rather than the word “may” (which is a choice).

  • First time charter schools will be granted a license to operate for a term of 5 years.  It will automatically renew at that point for 20 years.  Most of the Harmony/ Gulen charter schools (currently under question) will fall in the 20 year category.

  • The TEA will be required to post all vacant or underutilized facilities for all to see.  For organized charter efforts underway, it will be easy to snap up these facilities all over the state.

  • No new charter will have to pay rent or purchase the facility.  They pay $1.

  • The license of a charter school can be revoked by the newly formed commission only under the following circumstance:

      a.  The school performs badly in 3 out of 5 years
b.  The school is not fiscally satisfactory on multiple reviews

Questions to ask…..

1. Why are non- elected officials being put in charge without public accountability?
2.  Why a 20 year renewal?
3.  Shouldn’t we worry about enormous expansion of schools of any type without input?
4.  What if the curriculum is found to be offensive?
5.  Why is our state funding for-profit enterprises?

The Education Committee on SB 2 (Senator Dan Patrick) concerning Charter Schools is considering what to do.  They must hear from you. ASAP The committee members are:

Chair: Sen. Dan Patrick   512) 463-0107
Vice Chair: Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr.  (512) 463-0127
Members: Sen. Donna Campbell  512) 463-0125
  Sen. Robert Duncan  (512) 463-0128
  Sen. Kel Seliger  (512) 463-0131
  Sen. Larry Taylor  (512) 463-0111
Sen. Leticia Van de Putte  (512) 463-0126
  Sen. Royce West  (512) 463-0123

Below are charter school safeguards that have been proposed by various experts.

1. That a financial audit conducted under generally accepted accounting practices by an independent, reputable auditor be required – and publicly available – from any charter school operator applying for bond guarantees or other financial incentives;

2. That the name, address, and citizenship of all board members and key administrators applying for said guarantee(s) or other financial incentives issued by the state be recorded and made available to the public;

3. That the funds in the underlying bonds or other financial incentives to privately owned, publicly financed schools are to be used solely for schools within Texas;

4. Severe criminal penalties for fraudulent activities involving bond guarantees or other financial incentives issued by states – such as a Class 2 Felony for criminal or securities fraud violations.

===================

Below Safeguards proposed in the 82nd Legislative Session in Texas but that the Texas Legislature did not pass:

1.  Proof of U. S. citizenship for all charter school operator board members and top five highest-paid administrators. (Public ISD trustees must be U. S. citizens.)

2.  Names, titles, and biographies posted online for all charter operator board members and top five highest-paid administrators.

3.  Check registers posted online. (It is estimated that over 70 % of local ISD dollars are online.)

Why did these safeguards not pass? Because the elected officials were beholden to the lobby groups in Austin vs the people who elected them as their Representatives.

Are Texas Turkish Charter Schools Really Public Schools

Date posted: October 25, 2011

Below is a very important article by By MerryLynn Gerstenschlager. TEF VP and Education Liaison

Had anyone told me that I would end up spending the bulk of my time during the most recent Texas Legislative Session and Special Session lobbying on Turkish charter schools, technically known as Harmony charter schools, I would have laughed at them.

However, this turned out to be no laughing matter and by the end of the Special Session, the legislature had called for an investigation of all charter schools by the House General Investigating and Ethics Committee.

The forthcoming investigation was precipitated by Texas Eagle Forum’s and Peyton Wolcott’s (Publisher – Public Ed Commentary) unsuccessful efforts to amend legislation that will now allow certain charter schools to use the $25 billion dollar Permanent School Fund (PSF) to guarantee new construction bonds. Public schools already enjoy this privilege. The PSF is also known as the Children’s Textbook Fund.

Peyton Wolcott’s research provided outstanding information throughout session. Upon learning that there are 36 Harmony charter campuses in Texas and that their operators are mostly Turkish men who have been educated and previously employed in Turkey, we dubbed the Harmony charter schools “Turkish charter schools.” We began to scrutinize them in the context of this legislation. Harmony is overseen by the Cosmos Foundation, a non-profit organization that has received a quarter of a billion dollars in Texas taxpayer dollars in the past three years. Note that there are 156 Harmony-related charter schools in the U.S.

Harmony refers to their schools as “charter” as well as “public” schools. On February 1, 2011, “Harmony Public Schools” organized the “Bond Financing for Charter Schools” luncheon at the Austin Omni Hotel. Among the speakers was former Counselor to President George W. Bush, Karen Hughes, who welcomed guests “on behalf of Harmony Public Schools” to talk “about innovative ways to finance school facilities.” Harmony had hired Hughes through Burson-Marsteller, the prestigious marketing firm, to kick off Harmony’s efforts to pass this legislation.

Harmony was scheduled to open a new School of Political Science in Austin in August of 2011. Because Harmony schools emphasize Turkish culture and also take Texas elected officials on free trips to Turkey, we contemplated how American government and the U.S. Constitution might be taught in this school. And with so many Texas teachers looking for work, we wondered why Cosmos has brought 1,300 teachers here from Turkey on H1-B visas?

We were concerned that five members of the Senate Education Committee had accepted a collective total of $15,000, and that seven members of the House Public Education Committee had accepted a collective total of $11,500 in campaign funds from the Texas Charter School Association (TCSA). The TCSA had hired 11 lobbyists to push for this legislation. Among these lobbyists were former State Representative Diane Delisi and former State Senator Kyle Janek. One of the PSF charter school guarantee bills had to pass out of these committees to take on a life in the House and Senate.

Source Cosmos Foundation Inc.

The focus on Turkish influence in Texas schools was emphasized when the Senate passed Senate Resolution 85 honoring the Turkish imam Fethullah Gulen. Gulen was given asylum in Pennsylvania in 1997 when he was driven out of Turkey by his own government for trying to reinstate a caliphate in this secular nation. Since then, Gulen lives here in self-imposed exile, even though he has been exonerated in Turkey.

In order to protect the $25 billion Children’s Textbook Fund, Texas Eagle Forum and Peyton Wolcott began to lobby that the following fiduciary duty-of-care amendments be placed in the legislation:

1. Proof of U.S. citizenship for all charter school operator board members and top five highest paid administrators (public ISD trustees must be U.S. citizens). 2. Names, titles, and biographies posted online for all charter operator board members and top five highest paid administrators. 3. Check registers posted online (over 70% of local ISD dollars are online).

We advocated for these safeguards because the bills lacked a requirement for accountability and transparency. We had learned that at least two members of the Cosmos Foundation’s current leadership had not paid their franchise taxes, determining them “Not in Good Standing” with the State Comptroller’s Office. As Peyton Wolcott asked: If leadership does not show fiscal responsibility in their personal business, what guarantee did we have that they will show fiscal responsibility while handing public monies?

Another push for the legislation came from Representative Jose Menendez (D-San Antonio) who authorized a flyer from the Harmony schools to be placed in all House members’ mailboxes. The Harmony flyer asked House members to vote against our three fiduciary duty-ofcare amendments.

The bills to tap into the PSF died during the Regular Session, but were resurrected during the Special Session in June. During that time the New York Times published an article about how the Texas Turkish charter schools spend public monies and highlighted how their construction contracts have been awarded to Turkishowned contractors, even though they had been underbid by other companies. The Times also connected Harmony schools to the followers of Fethullah Gulen.

By the next to the last day of the Special Session, the charter school PSF school bond guarantee legislation had been amended into a critical budget bill that had to pass to meet constitutional requirements. Ultimately, the budget bill passed, but without our three fiduciary dutyof- care amendments.

Yes, the bill passed, but apparently, some legislators were catching on to the idea that the Turkish charter schools should come under more scrutiny than they had in the past. Some House members concerned about rural schools and charter schools would not give the critical budget bill their approval until it had been established that charter schools will be investigated during the Interim by the General Investigating and Ethics Committee, chaired by Rep. Chuck Hopson (R-Jacksonville).

Once the investigation begins, I hope that Chairman Hopson will also look into the contrast portrayed in the accompanying photo of two schools in Ft Worth, Texas. The first photo was taken from the campus of Westcreek Elementary School, looking directly across the street to the campus of the Harmony Science Academy. Note how there is no fence around the Westcreek Elementary campus, but an iron fence surrounds the Harmony Science Academy campus.

In the second picture, note Harmony’s signs that say “NO TRESPASSING, NO LOITERING, [and] NO SOLICITING.” Since Harmony charter schools are paid for by taxpayer dollars and are called “Harmony Public Schools,” why do they have a “No Trespassing” sign at the entrance to their schools? And why do they not want to require that their board members seeking the PSF school construction bond guarantee be American citizens just like local school board trustees? Are they genuinely “public” schools?

This brings up another point…the Harmony schools are Texas Education Agency schools, run with taxpayer dollars, that are not controlled by local parents in the form of elected school board trustees. Put another way, these are schools of the state education agency, rather than schools that are accountable to local taxpayers and parents. The accountability is to the state, rather than to local parents. Local control is non-existent, as contrasted to the Westcreek Elementary School across the street that is in the Fort Worth ISD where there is an elected, local school board that is accountable to parents and taxpayers.

I look forward to the upcoming investigation of charter schools. While they have every legal right to experiment with alternative ways of educating students, there can never be a compromise on accountability and transparency in education.

Texas’ Gulen-Cosmos-Harmony Charter Schools Spent Almost $6 Million in Three Years for Travel Expenses

Date posted: August 14, 2011

By Donna Garner

Over the course of three years, the Gulen/Cosmos Foundation/Harmony Charter Schools in Texasspent almost $6 Million on travel expenses.

How many of these dollars were taxpayers’ state and federal dollars?

Purportedly, the Turquoise Council of Americans and Eurasians is paying for the “free” trips to Turkey that are given to elected politicians to pressure them to support the Gulen-Cosmos Foundation-Harmony Charter Schools in the legislature.  Selected journalists are also given “free” trips to Turkey to get them to create “puff” pieces in the media.

If indeed the Turquoise Council is paying for politicians’ and journalists’ travel expenses to Turkey, that still leaves us to ponder two questions:

(1)  On what travel expenses have the Gulen-Cosmos Foundation-Harmony Charter Schools with only 11,281 students spent almost $6 Million in three years?

(2) Did these Harmony Charter Schools spend our state and federal tax dollars to pay for thesetravel expenses, some of which may have been for the “free” indoctrination trips to Turkey?

Almost $6 Million in three years for only 11,281 corrected from 11,975 students is a tremendous amount of money to spend on travel expenses!

For comparison, Dallas ISD has approximately 147,588 students which is more than 12 times as many students as Texas Harmony Charter Schools’ enrollment.  I cannot imagine Dallas ISD, nor any regular public school, spending almost $72 Million on travel in three years.

* The Texas Education Agency released the accountability data for 2011 (TAKS scores) on 7.29.11.  To establish a total student enrollment figure for the Harmony Charter Schools, I went through all of the Harmony school listings and totaled up the number of students who took the most common TAKS tests — Reading/ELA.  The total number is 11,281 corrected from 11,975 students.
