Other important facts
  • Joe Straus refuses to sign the Texas Budget Compact (Press Release, 4/16/2012, Statement on Texas Budget Compact)
  •  Refuses to sign the Taxpayer Pledge (www.taxpayerpledge.com)
  •  Despite a supermajority of Republicans, the House failed to pass spending limits.

Redistricting facts
  • Joe Straus’ Redistricting plan punished conservatives (RedState.com, 4/22/2011, Texas Redistricting Plan Punishes Texas Conservatives)
  • Hispanic conservatives were drawn out of GOP-friendly House districts, including Raul Torres of Corpus Christi, Aaron Pena of Edinburg and Jose Aliseda.
  • The first House redistricting map had 7 GOP vs. GOP incumbent pairings. This would ensure that we lose 7 GOP house members. It forces a Republican to run against another Republican instead of a Democrat.

To reinforce the message that electing a significant margin of conservative House representatives signals voter expectations of conservative House leadership, WomenOnTheWall.org has released Texas Speaker Showdown II – WE’RE BACK! video follow-up to the 2010 Speaker Showdown theme. “Conservative House Speaker Or Your Seat.”

If you are ready to take a stand call your State Representative today  Here is a list of them. Tell them to vote for the most Conservative Candidate in the Race for Speaker; David Simpson and then join us in Austin Jan. 7th and 8th.

Truth Matters and Character Counts~ David Simpson for Speaker of the Texas House

Date posted: December 10, 2012

“Never Give In ~ Never Yield to Force ~ Never Yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy ~

I am not giving up ~ Providence and the People brought me to this legislature.” ~ Speaker of the House Candidate David Simpson

Bryan Hughes today issued the following statement regarding Representative David Simpson’s filing for Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives:

“I wholeheartedly endorse my friend David Simpson for Speaker of the House. David is uniquely qualified to lead the House at this pivotal time in our history. David Simpson has earned his reputation as an eminently fair, highly principled, and hardworking legislatorREAD MORE…

The video below is a great introduction to David Simpson, Candidate for Speaker of the House, who has been endorsed by former candidate Representative Bryan Hughes. It is perfectly on message with why there is a need for new leadership in the Texas House.

While many of us are still devastated from our recent losses on the national political scene, it is extremely important that we refocus our attention and energy to what is going on in our own state. In November 2010 a conservative revolution began in Texas, which has continued through the 2012 primary, primary runoffs, and general election. And while the electorate has made its desires clear, key leaders in Austin have stifled our movement’s progress—none more so than Speaker of the Texas House Joe Straus.

Race for Texas Speaker of the House ~ Our Voice Matters

Date posted: December 8, 2012

Dear Fellow Conservative Texan,

While many of us are still devastated from our recent losses on the national political scene, it is extremely important that we refocus our attention and energy to what is going on in our own state. In November 2010 a conservative revolution began in Texas, which has continued through the 2012 primary, primary runoffs, and general election. And while the electorate has made its desires clear, key leaders in Austin have stifled our movement’s progress—none more so than Speaker of the Texas House Joe Straus.

While Texans have continually selected the most conservative candidate in the primary and elected them to office in November, true conservative reforms of state government have been slowed or outright stopped by the decisions of Speaker Straus, and it’s time that voters exercised their power to select a new Speaker who is committed to allowing the conservative values of our Representatives and those of the people to have their day in court. Here are a few of the more troubling aspects of Speaker Straus’ record:

1.      Joe Straus, as a State Representative, has pro-abortion votes he refuses to explain. In 2007, Straus earned a 100% NARAL Pro-Choice Texas rating. He is still on record as supporting the existing abortion law Roe v. Wade.

2.      Joe Straus is on the record as stating that we can’t “cut our way to prosperity,” which echoes the sentiments of Barack Obama nationally. Rick Perry and David Dewhurst have both signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, which is a firm pledge to oppose any tax increases, while Straus has not.

3.      Joe Straus’ handling of redistricting has revealed a disdain for grassroots conservative legislators and voters. Leaked emails from his top level staff and key lieutenants illustrate a hostile stance against our movement and its leaders, who opted for the most conservative maps possible. Straus’ team openly mocked efforts to further our cause.

We as voters can, and rightfully should, inject ourselves in the selection of the next Speaker of the Texas House. Joe Straus originally came to power by forming a coalition of 65 Democrats and 11 Republicans. Conservatives can do better, and it is incumbent upon the grassroots to put pressure on our state representatives and support them in pursuit of a better steward of our principles in the Legislature.

I ask that you call your state representative and also email them. Let them know where you, the grassroots, stand on this pivotal issue. Our elected officials need to know that we are behind them and that when their term is up, they can count on our support.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Texas Needs and Deserves a New Speaker of the House

Date posted: December 4, 2012

By Bob Hall

Part 1

This is the first in a series of articles on why Texas needs a new Speaker of the House in the state legislature. Bryan Hughes, a proven conservative has courageously stepped forward to challenge the incumbent, Joe Straus, for this position. No doubt this will be tough challenge. Joe Straus has served his money master well and has amassed a lot of power and influence with those who control the big bucks in Austin; including the more influential Democrats. It will take Republican state Reps with integrity, courage and a commitment to “service before self” to stand firmly on principle and replace Joe Straus.

Joe Straus vs A Fence Post

Texans in general and especially conservative Texans deserve a real conservative as Speaker of the House. From a good study of their track-records, it is absolutely clear that Bryan Hughes would be a far better conservative Speaker than Joe Straus. In fact a Fence Post would be a better Speaker than Joe Straus. Before you say “WHAT, are you nuts?”. Consider the following, all of which Joe Straus has done in the past and/or plans to do if he is re-elected:

A Fence Post would not appoint liberal Democrats to key committee positions.

A Fence Post would not appoint only loyal liberal Republicans to committee positions.

A Fence Post would not support Democrat candidates running against a Republican

A Fence Post would not try to spend the Rainy Day Fund on budget growth.

A Fence Post would not punish conservative Reps who disagreed with him on issues.

A Fence Post would not suppress conservative legislation through committee manipulation.

A Fence Post would not use accounting gimmicks to balance the budget.

A Fence Post would not kill legislation that improves education.

A Fence Post would not kill legislation that eliminates wasteful and unnecessary spending

A Fence Post would not kill legislation that improves health care delivery and reduces cost.

A Fence Post would not kill legislation that improves the business environment by eliminating a repressive tax burden.

A Fence Post would not kill legislation that restores constitutional rights and liberties trampled by the federal government.

A Fence Post would not create re-districting maps that punished those Reps who opposed him.

A Fence Post would not rely on Democrats to be elected Speaker.

A Fence Post would not use power, favors or money to influence Reps.

A Fence Post would not take millions of dollars from lobbyists who primarily give to Democrats.

A Fence Post would not use the legislature for personal to expand gambling in Texas.

A Fence Post would not vote to create a payroll tax or to increase the sales tax.

A Fence Post would not kill legislation to reduce the size of state government.

A Fence Post would not be referred to by Democrats as “their best friend in the state legislature:

A Fence Post would not be referred to by the homosexual community as “their best friend in the Texas legislature”.

A Fence Post would not advocate abortion expansion by supporting Planned Parenthood.

A Fence Post would not be thanked by Planned Parenthood for “his tireless efforts’ on their behalf.

A Fence Post would not have a family that stood to make tens of millions of dollars if slot machines were allowed at racetracks.

A Fence Post would not refuse to sign the Texas Budget Compact which would limit spending growth to inflation plus population growth.

A Fence Post would not be beholding to the “Open Borders” bib-big-big lobby.

And, this is just a partial list. The point is, in case you missed it, just about any true conservative would be better for Texas than Joe Straus. The real positive for supporting Bryan Hughes is that none of the above could or would be applied to him.

A vote for Joe Straus is a vote for PERSONAL GAIN

(Power, Money and/or Special Favors)

A REAL CONSERVATIVE WITH INTEGRITY COULD NOT VOTE FOR JOE STRAUS EVEN IF JOE WAS THE ONLY ONE IN THE RACE.

The only thing a Conservative who can’t bring themselves to vote for the Most Conservative Candidate in the Race for Speaker is to give Protest Vote!

White Light Joe!

Find your Rep here and call him/her. Tell them that you know all about who Joe Straus and how bad he has been for Texas. You expect your Rep to vote for the most conservative person running for the Speaker’s job and it is not Joe Straus.

You’re darn right I want Conservative Trial Lawyer Bryan Hughes for Speaker of the House in Texas

Date posted: November 26, 2012

Yes Bryan Hughes is a trial lawyer, yes he is a Conservative Trial lawyer who has voted in favor of every major piece of tort reform.

Joe Straus, on the other hand, has as his speaker vote base the party of lawsuit abuse and open season on business. He even shared gambling interests with Steve Mostyn at the start of the 82nd legislature, when Mostyn had been let into the ultra-exclusive racetrack license-holding club.”

Let’s take a look at Speaker Joe Straus, a business owner of bankrupt racetracks who has partnered with Vegas gambling interests. Retama strikes deal with Vegas company.

Retama Park opened in 1995 and has never made money. The track’s owner, Retama Development Corp., a municipal subdivision of Selma, filed for bankruptcy in 1996. It emerged from bankruptcy a year later, shedding some of its debt.

Todd Eilers, a securities analyst who follows the gaming industry, views the deal as a “defensive move” for Pinnacle. It has three Louisiana casinos that draw Texas gamblers, so those properties could be hurt if Texas ever adds gaming.

“This should help soften the blow” if Texas gets gaming, said Eilers, a senior research analyst with Roth Capital Partners LLC in Newport Beach, Calif. He added, “I doubt (Pinnacle) would be lobbying all that hard for casinos in the state.”

State lawmakers would have to be persuaded to let voters decide whether to allow gaming at Texas racetracks or elsewhere.

Track officials previously have said they wanted to bring in a financial partner to fund the track’s losses while they pushed for legalized gaming at state racetracks.

So, I ask Texas State Representatives are you going to stand with an “Establishment Republican” known for making deals; whose family stands to gain millions if gambling is passed in Texas or are you going to stand with the most Conservative candidate in the race for speaker who is known for standing up for what is right for Texas not what is right for his own personal gain.

Here is a little reminder of the corruption in Texas politics that  Grassroots/Tea Party activists have been standing up against.

If you are ready to take a stand call your State Representative today  Here is a list of them. Tell them to vote for the most Conservative Candidate in the Race for Speaker; Bryan Hughes and then join us in Austin Jan. 7th and 8th.
