Race for Texas Speaker of the House ~ Our Voice Matters

Dear Fellow Conservative Texan,

While many of us are still devastated from our recent losses on the national political scene, it is extremely important that we refocus our attention and energy to what is going on in our own state. In November 2010 a conservative revolution began in Texas, which has continued through the 2012 primary, primary runoffs, and general election. And while the electorate has made its desires clear, key leaders in Austin have stifled our movement’s progress—none more so than Speaker of the Texas House Joe Straus.

While Texans have continually selected the most conservative candidate in the primary and elected them to office in November, true conservative reforms of state government have been slowed or outright stopped by the decisions of Speaker Straus, and it’s time that voters exercised their power to select a new Speaker who is committed to allowing the conservative values of our Representatives and those of the people to have their day in court. Here are a few of the more troubling aspects of Speaker Straus’ record:

1.      Joe Straus, as a State Representative, has pro-abortion votes he refuses to explain. In 2007, Straus earned a 100% NARAL Pro-Choice Texas rating. He is still on record as supporting the existing abortion law Roe v. Wade.

2.      Joe Straus is on the record as stating that we can’t “cut our way to prosperity,” which echoes the sentiments of Barack Obama nationally. Rick Perry and David Dewhurst have both signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, which is a firm pledge to oppose any tax increases, while Straus has not.

3.      Joe Straus’ handling of redistricting has revealed a disdain for grassroots conservative legislators and voters. Leaked emails from his top level staff and key lieutenants illustrate a hostile stance against our movement and its leaders, who opted for the most conservative maps possible. Straus’ team openly mocked efforts to further our cause.

We as voters can, and rightfully should, inject ourselves in the selection of the next Speaker of the Texas House. Joe Straus originally came to power by forming a coalition of 65 Democrats and 11 Republicans. Conservatives can do better, and it is incumbent upon the grassroots to put pressure on our state representatives and support them in pursuit of a better steward of our principles in the Legislature.

I ask that you call your state representative and also email them. Let them know where you, the grassroots, stand on this pivotal issue. Our elected officials need to know that we are behind them and that when their term is up, they can count on our support.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
