How Ironic ~ Speaker Joe Straus on Retribution

Joe Straus says.... No MOR Conservatives I find it very ironic that Speaker Joe Straus was preaching after the last legislative session that retribution would not be tolerated in the Texas House. There was no place for it, and yet there are many Texas Conservatives who caved and requested that David Simpson withdraw from the race for Speaker because of a fear of retribution.  When you listen to the  videos below it is clear that Pat Caddell was right again.  In his speech at the “Keep Texas Strong- Speaker Showdown II” he stated that the challenge in politics today is that it is not about what is good for the American people, it is about “political arrangements.” It is abundantly clear to me that there is a great deal of political corruption in Texas politics and arrangements have been made. Just listen to Joe Straus after he was elected speaker of the 82nd session on the floor of the house.

Now listen to David Simpson’s speech on Tuesday and his reasoning for protecting his colleagues.

State Representative David Simpson, District 7

My friends,

What a year this has been already, and we’re just in the first weeks of January! As many of you are no doubt aware, I ran for Speaker of the House, the presiding officer of the House of Representatives. And you, as my constituents and supporters, deserve to know why and what happened during the campaign.

The office of Speaker determines much of how the House operates during session. The Speaker controls the assignment of committee chairmen, who in turn control the flow of legislation through their committees, as well as the vast majority of committee assignments for each member individually. The Speaker also administers the rules of the House, or the “laws” by which we pass laws.

During the previous Legislature, I watched as the current leadership undermined the democratic process through an unequal administration of the rules, intimidated members through threats of retribution should they dare to challenge the leadership, and failed with regard to respecting each Member as a duly-elected equal, responsible for representing their constituents.

So the arrangement was made that Rep. David Simpson would protect his colleagues from Joe Straus who has proven he lied in the video above and has himself delivered retribution to those who cross him. The challenge with this arrangement is that the Texas voters will not know if their elected official voted for Joe Straus, thus protecting State Reps. from retribution by voters in the primary- which is the only legal form of retribution that should be tolerated in the Texas House. We will see in the coming days if this arrangement was successful. The reasoning behind it, is that there is an opportunity for some rule changes in the house which would decentralize power from the Speaker. One of the good guys in the Texas house is a true man of conviction (Rep. Bill Zedler (R) who has proposed to amend the House Rules as follows:

a. No Committee Chairmen could serve on the Calendars Committee. The Calendars Committee basically controls what legislation is brought up for a ‘floor vote;’ and

b. If a measure has 76 or more co-authors the Calendars Committee must submit it to the House Floor for an up or down vote within 7 to 10 days. By the way a similar provision is in place in the U. S. House of Representatives. It is called a ‘bill of petition.’

“Corruption under the existing rules during the last session caused several liberty-minded bills that had broad popular support to never see the ‘light of day.’ Although the Anti-TSA Groping Bill did finally reach the House Floor towards the end of the 82nd General Session, it’s pace, to say the least, was ‘leisurely.’

These House Rule reforms will be debated and voted on beginning Monday, January 14 on the floor of the House. Let’s immediately contact our local Texas House lawmakers and insist that they vote for these changes. This will help to ‘decentralize’ the powers that currently reside exclusively with the House Speaker. The hope is that these rules will ‘serve as a wall’ against future corruption of the legislative process. This vote is where we will see which Texas Reps. are Texas Bold or Texas Weak so we can hold them accountable in the primary.

One of the challenges with this arrangement is that it is the Speaker who interprets the rules so there may be room for Straus to do what he is known to do best, manipulate the process.

As our friend Weston over at Agenda Wise stated….

“If Simpson doesn’t force a floor vote, Straus’s power will indeed be increased, and he has already said that his agenda is across-the-board moderate liberalism.

This would be a strange move for Simpson’s allies to make, if not so much for Simpson.

Simpson’s opposition of Straus is very public. He can always imply that he was the only one strong enough to do the right thing. This will make him very strong in district.

His friends are the ones who are likely to pay for it. They have already embarrassed Straus, that much is done. They have already destroyed the possibility of trust with Straus.

What not getting a floor vote does is provide them none of the benefits of being a Straus ally while simultaneously having none of the benefits of being a Straus opponent. It will demotivate the people who create their conservative discount at home. It will be Sid Miller all over again – a conservative who was easy to beat when his grassroots got wind of his speaker compromise and largely removed themselves from the equation.

Obstacles along the way are always learning opportunities. No floor vote would be that, but a bitter one considering it was so very illogical and unnecessary.”

So as they say- we shall see what the consequences of this arrangement will be. One note of warning to those elected officials who have had a conservative voting record but who clearly after the last Speaker Showdown joined forces with Straus to have access to the power inside the establishment- We the People of Texas know the game you played and we are tired of the political establishment arrangements for self interest and power. I believe this quote sums it up clearly.

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves among those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.” Quote by: Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 B.C.) Roman Statesman, Philosopher and Orator

As I stated to several State Reps. I spoke with. This is not about you and what you can bring back to your district, this is about political corruption and the survival of our nation. Teri Hall put it best in her article….

Caddell: Three-quarters say America no longer run by consent of governed

Caddell encouraged the grassroots to stay the course regardless of what happens in the Speaker’s race. He indicated only force will reform government now. They surely won’t do it themselves. He concluded saying, “They swear an oath to the American people, not to a political party. We need politicians who say ‘I’m an instrument of your will, committed to the American dream,’ not political influence and corruption.”

The exciting thing was that Breitbart TV has published Pat Caddell’s amazing speech.
