‘People who are standing to lose something are willing to fight harder’

Sometimes it just seems the federal government is doing everything possible to make job creation difficult. Mike Thompson, a geologist who owns mines in San Juan County, Colorado, tells the Campfire Blog that Congress is proposing to expand a wilderness area that would severely limit the mining of valuable minerals. These minerals, including the gallium used in cell phones and tellurium used in solar panels, could help promote “green energy” and reduce American reliance on mineral-rich countries like China.

But the Ruling Political Elite wants to declare this valuable resource off-limits to any human industry, which could hurt many families in Ouray and surrounding areas–and ensure that America must rely on other countries for these resources.

Thompson says things are already tough enough for Colorado miners:  “Wading through the permitting process is damn near impossible already.” But, “add [the expansion of the protected wilderness] to the mix, and [these miners] don’t stand a chance.  There must be a buffer zone between those of us that make a legitimate living, and land that is locked away forever.  If anything, we should be talking about reversing or shrinking the Wilderness areas that already exist!”

Last week, 400 citizens on both sides of the argument showed up to a 3.5 hour meeting held by Congressman Scott Tipton. Many were there to beg the Ruling Elite not to further harm their livelihoods by making even more land unusable. Thompson said this “just goes to show that people who stand to lose something are willing to fight harder and longer to save it.”

We’ll see if the Ruling Elite decide to listen.
